Nottuln

Settlement traces in the area Nottuln, go back to around 4000 BCv. In the 9th-century, probably in the time of the first Münsteranian bishop Liudger, a parish church was built in Nottuln. Due to the Martins-Patrczinium, an earlier founding might be possible. The original name 'Nutlon', means probably nut-forest or nut-grove.

In the 11th-century, after chaplain Albert Wilken's forgeries, already in the 9th-century, a ladies chapter was created in Nottuln, where the Heriburg von Nottuln was worshipped as a saint. Her coffin and her bones can be seen in Nottuln's Catholic church.

Urbanistic interesting is Nottuln's 'chapter borough' in close proximity to the parish church St. Martinus and the area of the former ladies chapter.

After a devastating fire in 1748, the borough was rebuilt with the Ascheberger, the Kettelerschen and the Reckschen Curia under the control of the Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun. Baumberger sandstone was used as building material for the protruding areas.

Even though Schlaun's plans could not be completely realised, the chapter borough still presents itself as an ensemble of Baroque buildings. The parish church was also rebuilt after the fire and then received its characteristic Baroque hood in the form of an onion dome.
