The community Nordkirchen is situated exactly in the centre of the city triangle Dortmund, Münster and Hamm. Neighbouring communities, starting in the west clockwise is Lüdinghausen, Senden and Ascheberg in the district Coesfeld as well as Werne and Selm from the district Unna.

Nordkirchen's dominant building material are dark-red bricks. In the village centre is the Catholic church St. Mauritius, built by Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius as Baroque hall church in 1715. Another interesting sacred building is the octagonal Johannes-von-Nepomuk-Chapel from the year 1722.

Nordkirchen has altogether 13 buildings to which, Germany's last important Baroque architect, Johann Conrad Schlaun contributed. Outstanding is here Nordkirchen Palace, also known as 'Westphalian Versailles'. Further works are the Schlauncafé, the old Treasury, the children's sanatorium an the former sexton's office.
